OCTOBER GUILD MEETING - ONLINE - 17TH OCTOBER 2020 - Weaving on Small Card Looms
Our next Guild Meeting will again be held online and our topic for the day is
SMALL
CARD LOOMS
Doors (screens, of course) open at 10.15 Bring your own coffee and take the opportunity to chat to each other briefly - Zoom gives the main screen to whoever is talking at the time.
Diane will start the meeting at 10.30 and after any notices there will be a Show and Tell session.
At 11.00 Ros Lobb will lead a session on weaving on small card looms. This month, let’s all try to produce a small piece of weaving by making the simplest of looms using a piece of cardboard.
It could form a cover for a phone or by making several small squares combined to form a bag, cushion or wall hanging.
In preparation for the online meeting we suggest cutting a piece of rigid card from a cardboard box (if it is corrugated make sure the corrugations are vertical). You could weave 10cm squares on a card about 14cms by 18cms in size . Starting 2cms from the side, make 17 cuts, 6mm deep, at intervals of 6mm along the top and bottom of the card.
These slits will be used to wind the ‘warp' thread around the card from top to bottom, so you will need strong thread, either linen, cotton or tightly spun wool. At the back of the card secure the beginning and end of the warp with masking tape.
To form the weft, you can experiment with wool, thread, thin cut strips of fine cotton (c.12mm wide) or silk (c.2.5cms wide), lace or ribbon. You will need a small flat stick shuttle or a large darning needle to thread the weft through the warps. If you are weaving with cloth the warp will show so choose a neutral or contrast colour or a combination of both.
We plan to have an online Sales Table during each meeting (items can then be transferred to the Sales page on the Members' Blog). If you have anything to sell please send details to Sara wsdstratford@gmail.com) before the meeting. Remember to include 10% commission for the guild, and it might be worth finding out what postage would cost in case you cannot send parcels via the local pony express leave-it-on-thedoorstep-and-retire-to-a-suitable-distance-probably-wearing-a-mask system which several members seem to have devised.
If you have a photograph it might help, and you should add as much information as you can. Sara can then prepare a Sales Table page which will be available during the meeting. We can also bring items to the attention of members when Diane does the notices and during the Show and Tell. If you miss this chance to buy, the Chat facility is there for the whole of the meeting. If you click on the Chat button at the bottom of the screen you can get a drop down list and choose to chat privately to any member who is in the meeting. Sounds complicated but is actually straightforward.
Our Britspin Team - Over the Rainbow - will be in the midst of their challenge but will be along with us spinning away (see separate blog post shortly)
Sara will send out invitations to members a few days before the meeting. See you all there!
