FEBRUARY MEETING - PLYING WITH A PURPOSE

PLYING WITH A PURPOSE with Chris Pegler

Plying is the last activity that Chris has excavated from her 'Certificate of
Achievement in Spinning' learning journey. It seemed appropriate to leave plying till last as it is almost the last process in spinning yarn. She will try to share what she knows without being an expert tutor and mindful of not all guild members being spinners! (GBA stands for: Getting Better At and recognises that we each have a different starting point). This GBA is a (very deferred) companion to her Taming Twist session in 2019.

Unlike that one we are not together in a room comparing what we do with ease and so she has changed some of her plans from her in-person session due last year. So on our zoom call she wants to get you all (spinners and non-spinners alike) to do some measuring and reflecting on ply before the session. She is asking that you find 1-3 yarn(s) you like to use or spin and do some measuring, so that we can all make comparisons. Further details on pre-meeting activity and what to bring to the meeting are detailed in the February Newsletter.

For the Feb 20th session Chris will explain some of the techniques and
technologies of plying with opportunity for hands on practice and some tips for making DIY tools. She will show you examples and offer some ideas for plying diagnosis and remedies to salvage what may be going wrong. Finally she will delve into what proficiency in plying can lead to (boucle and other speciality plying techniques). Hopefully those who don't spin yarn themselves will at least learn more about how yarn of various types is created.

Screens will open at 10.20 am, Anna will start the meeting with any notices at 10.30 am, and Chris will start her session at approximately 10.45 am. Afterwards there will be a chance to show and tell us about what you have been doing and the meeting will close at around 1-1.30 pm.

As with our normal face to face meetings we welcome guests to our monthly meetings, so do get in touch, we'd love to see you there.
