WHORLS AROUND THE WORLD 17th November 2018
On 17th November Guild Meeting Amanda Hannaford will be demonstrating and talking about Spindling and Whorls around the World.
Amanda Hannaford who is well known, internationally known, as a spinning teacher and dyer is also well known as a frequent winner of the Bothwell longest thread award, judged in Tasmania every two years. This is an international contest where you compete to spin the finest thread from 10g of wool or alpaca. In 2017 Amanda produced 858.520 metres of woollen thread on her spindle - very fine spinning indeed - to win the spindle category internationally.

In the morning (starting at 10.15 - note earlier start) twelve workshop participants will learn how to use different types of spindle. She has an ambitious programme in mind, so all participants need to know the basics of spindle spinning. The workshop will demonstrate use of the supported spindle, and show the differences between bead whorl and the Tibetan and Russian spindles. Then she will demonstrate on in-hand spindles (Akha and European from a Distaff. Those with suspended spindles can have a hands-on taste of both Worsted and Woollen spinning styles. Various spindles will be available to try.
There is a £5 charge per guild member towards this workshop or £15 per non-guild visitor (covers all day including staying for the talk). Guild members will be given priority up until 10th November and if more than 12 are interested names will be drawnfrom hat.
So please get your name to Chris (peglerpurl@gmail.com) if you are interested in taking part.
The afternoon is no less of a treat. Amanda's talk: Whorls around the World is part exhibition of her extensive collection and part talk. She promises: A look at the history of spinning and in particular the many beautiful tools that were in everyday use before the invention of the spinning wheel. A talk illustrated with slides together with my large collection of ancient whorls and spindles.
So that those members who are not taking part in the workshop have somewhere to meet (and make coffee etc), this meeting will be in the Foyer and Lounge.
Not one to be missed if you can possibly help it!
