Cotton spinning for the next (birthday) meeting
Guest speaker Sarah Wroot will be teaching an Introduction to Cotton
Spinning session (10 participants max) on the morning of the next ‘birthday’
meeting (20 May, 10.30-12.00) and will also do a talk on Cotton in the
afternoon (after lunch from around 2pm) with demonstrations of different techniques
and equipment and an opportunity to ‘have a go’. She will be bringing a charkha
with her.
Sarah (pictured spinning here) is a hand spinner who is learning to weave in order to use her hand spun yarn. She has published several articles in Spin Off, demonstrated spinning techniques for John Styles’ Historic Textiles workshop at the V&A, woven hand spun fabrics for use in the film industry, and offers workshops on fine spinning, cotton spinning and spinning for weaving. Currently living in Cambridgeshire, she and her husband expect to return to Canada in 2017. More information about her interests and work can be found on her blog ‘carpe diem’ at https://wroot.blog
The morning workshop is aimed at spinners with some experience (not
novices), whether they have used cotton before or not. Less experienced
spinners, or others who would prefer to do so, are welcome to come along and
observe. Those who took the small class with Amanda Hannaford in early
March I know are particularly
keen (that covered longdraw cotton and short fibres).
Sarah will bring extra materials packs (£5 each) for participants and
observers to take away and use at home. To calculate the packs required and let Sarah know numbers please
email us to let us know if you plan to be there in the morning, even if you wish to observe rather than spin.
You may be inspired to spin and weave a hat like the one that Sarah is modelling in this picture. Her own work and published in Spin Off. We really look forward to welcoming Sarah (and hat) to our guild.
POSTSCIPT: We all so enjoyed this session, Sarah is an awesome teacher and passed along some of her love of cotton as she shared her expertise.
